Lesson 2: W-8BEN Overview

In this lesson, ComplyPro discusses the Form W-8BEN, which is used by non-U.S. individuals to certify their non-U.S. status and claim beneficial ownership of income. The form allows for treaty claims for reduced withholding rates. Unlike the Form W-9, the Form W-8BEN is valid from the date signed until the end of the third succeeding calendar year, unless there are changes in circumstances. Joint owners must provide Forms W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E for the income or account to be treated as owned by a foreign person. The form requires a signature and certifications should not be altered.
